Volunteer Training
The village fire department can be effective only if our volunteers are
properly
trained.&nbps; This training is important not only to protect the
lives and
property of our citizens to the best of our abilities, but to insure
the safety
of all our firefighters.
General Training
General Training of the department consists of:
- Fire Behavior
- Arson Awareness
- Structural Collapse
- Blood Borne Pathogens
- Terrorist Threats
- Confined Entry
- Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
- Motor Vehicle Accidents
- Search and Rescue
- Pump Operation
- Ladder Truck Operation
- Electrical Hazards
- Natural & Man Made Gas
- Response Safety
- Fire Scene Safety
New members are required to complete the New York State Essentials of
Fire
Fighting course, which is taught by State Instructors, as soon as the
course is
offered within a reasonable driving distance. Currently the
course is 39
hours in length, although it will soon be 87 hours total. In
addition,
non-interior fire fighters are required to receive 8 hours of in-house
training
each year for non self contained breathing apparatus. All members
classified as interior fire fighters are required to receive 8
additional hours
of training on self-contained breathing apparatus annually.

- Portable pumps
- Generators
- Foam applications
- Chain/K12 saws
- Hose and nozzles
- Smoke ejectors
- Power Hawk rescue tool (Jaws of life)
- SCBA equipment
- Air bottle refilling station
- Portable cascade air bottle refilling station
- Ropes
- Hand tools
Driving training on emergency equipment is required to drive the
department
vehicles. The department has the following vehicles: A 1974 1,250
gallon/minute midship pumper; a 1990 1,250 gallon/minute midship
pumper; a 1964
ladder truck; a 1994 2,000 gallon tanker; a 1974 salvage van; a 1986
rescue
truck; and a 1986 4-wheel drive pickup.
Training Schedule
The department training schedule is the first Tuesday of each month
from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Training is also offered on Sunday mornings from 9:00 am to 11:00 am for those who work nights. Special classes are also offered by appointment with the Training Officer.
